Patterns… Colors, Sizes, and Borders
Have you ever found a pattern that you really do love, only to see that the colors are all wrong, the size isn’t going to fit, or wonder what’s with that border being different sizes on each side? Here are a few things to consider when making a quilt.
1. Colors
I would love to see patterns that were just in black and white, which aren’t colors at all. Then you would actually see the design without worrying about whether it’s in the wrong colors. The colors you love are the only thing that should matter.
2. Size
The size of a quilt should only be what you need to fit the space in your home. Does it need to be a bed quilt? Will it go on a twin, full, queen, or king bed? How deep is your mattress? Where will your wall hanging go, and how many places could it be hung? What size table rug do you need?
Size matters in all of these areas. Oh, and don’t forget—you can even hang some quilts on a door.
3. Borders
Does a quilt really need a border or post blocks in every corner?
Not really. I have some that don’t, and they make me happy!
I’ve made quilts with only a top or bottom border. I’ve made some with a border on just one side and across the bottom.
Post blocks don’t have to be in every corner, either. I have many quilts with post blocks only at the top and bottom of one side. The other side might not have one at all. I’ve even put post blocks in the middle of a side border.
There are no rules that say you have to put post blocks anywhere other than where you want them.
I really believe quilting should be fun. You can see my quilts here on my website. Study each of the patterns, and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about.
If you haven’t seen the Color Class I’ve put together, please take a look. And if you’re a beginner quilter, I hope you have a wonderful time making your first quilt. Enjoy the process as much as I do.
Hugs,
